Disagreement at the Federal Trade Commission
Two commissioners apparently unhappy at the appointment of one of the commissioners
Washington, DC - - (May 21, 2018) - - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently installed a new chairman and welcomed a number of new commissioners. According to Commission documents, there is disagreement among some of the FTC commissioners. The issue appears to revolve around a commissioner named Andrew Smith who will apparently serve as Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. Two disagreeing Commissioners (Commissioner Rohit Chopra and Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter) reportedly indicated (in writing) their concerns about Commissioner Smith's appointment.
FTC Chairman Simons apparently supported Smith's appointment. See Commission Chairman Simons' statement HERE.
Commissioners Chopra and Slaughter each issued separate statements. Their statements are posted as follows:
Commissioner Chopra's statement HERE. Commissioner Slaughter's statement HERE.
The Commission votes approving three other appointments (Hoffman, Kobayashi, and Abbott) were 5-0. The Commission vote approving the appointment of Smith was 3-2.
