High Point, North Carolina - - (April 12, 2019) - - As the current U.S. Administration embarked on a path heralded as a quest to address this nation's trade deficits and bring American industries back to the U.S.A, I was enthusiastic. This country truly needs to recapture, revive and reinvigorate its basic heavy industries. The tariffs may not be accomplishing those goals.

The statistics are not widely published; so, I cannot speak with specificity regarding current results. It does, however, appear to this observer that the tariffs project has been hijacked by some of the same entities that gave rise to the problems it proposes to redress.

Published reports and government rhetoric appear (to this observer) to indicate that the tariffs are being used as a lever to address the intellectual property dilemma that U.S. technology companies have encountered when attempting to operate in certain foreign countries. Addressing the intellectual property obstacles may be fine; but, that was not what the tariffs were originally about. The tariffs were supposed to bring back to America the massive numbers of basic and heavy industries that the rich business people have transferred overseas. That does not appear to be happening. (Even the return of certain Apple functions does not address the issues that many of us wanted to see addressed.)

We need to recapture the massive numbers of American industries that have been transferred abroad. Expanding oil and fossil fuels exploration (in the U.S.A.) does not accomplish that goal. Addressing the intellectual property concerns of big technology businesses does not accomplish that goal. Increasing part-time jobs (and thus lowering the "unemployment rate") does not accomplish that goal. We need to rebuild the basic heavy industries of the United States of America. We need to recapture those industries, bring those industries back to the United States of America and rebuild those industries (not for ourselves; but, for our grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren). It appears that we are thinking only of now. It appears that we are thinking only of ourselves. That is not right.

Rhetoric has its place; but, statistics are the proof in the pudding.

Why doesn't the U.S. Department of Commerce issue press releases about basic and heavy industries that are being recaptured, revived, and reinvigorated (in the United States of America)? Looking forward to opportunities in outer space (mostly for the rich) does not address the real problems right here in the United States of America right now.

Why doesn't the U.S. Department of the Treasury issue press releases about increases in American wealth that result from basic and heavy industries that are being recaptured, revived, and reinvigorated (in the United States of America)?

As observed earlier herein, the proof is in the statistics. What are the statistics?

If the tariffs are accomplishing the goals the American people want and need, provide the hard and factual statistics. (The intellectual property smoke screen won't fool rational Americans forever.)
