Statement on the passing of Congressman Walter B. Jones Jr. of North Carolina

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Congressman Walter Jones.

For over fifty years Congressman Jones and his father tirelessly represented the United States Marines at Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point and thousands of Veterans across eastern North Carolina.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie notes, “I had the honor of working with my fellow North Carolinian and friend Walter Jones for thirty years. His love for the men and women who wore the uniform knew no bounds. He was a public servant of uncommon humility and decency. A man of his stamp will be missed.”

Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Congressman John David Dingell, Jr.February 7, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of Chairman John David Dingell, Jr. of Michigan, who was the longest-serving Member of Congress in history:

“Today, we have lost a beloved pillar of the Congress and one of the greatest legislators in American history. Every chapter of Chairman John Dingell’s life has been lived in service to our country, from his time as a House Page, to his service in the Army during World War II, to his almost six decades serving the people of Michigan in the U.S. Congress. John Dingell leaves a towering legacy of unshakable strength, boundless energy and transformative leadership.

“Chairman Dingell had a hand in crafting many major legislative accomplishments over the past half-century. Yet, among the vast array of historic legislative achievements, few hold greater meaning than his tireless commitment to the health of the American people. During every Congress since 1955, Chairman Dingell introduced legislation to secure affordable, quality health care for all Americans. Because of his father’s legacy and his own leadership, in 1965, he gaveled Medicare into law. In 2010, it was my privilege to hold that same gavel as we passed the Affordable Care Act.

“Chairman Dingell was our distinguished Dean and Chairman, our legendary colleague and a beloved friend. His memory will stand as an inspiration to all who worked with him or had the pleasure of knowing him. His leadership will endure in the lives of the millions of American families he touched. We hope it is a comfort to Chairman Dingell’s beloved wife, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, and their entire family that so many mourn their loss and pray for them at this sad time.”

High Point University Supports Bennett College with $1 Million GiftHigh Point University President Nido Qubein is both a renowned motivational speaker and prolific fundraiser

High Point, NC - - (February 1, 2019) - - High Point University (of High Point, North Carolina, USA) provided (today) the following information:

Today, High Point University contributed $1 million to Bennett College to support Bennett and rally others to help the college reach their $5 million fundraising goal.

The announcement, made by HPU President Nido Qubein in HPU’s Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel, challenges supporters to meet the campaign’s total goal, which will allow Bennett to make an appeal to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to reinstate its accreditation.

“Like High Point University, Bennett College has roots in the United Methodist Church,” said Qubein. “Bennett is our partner in educating future leaders. As a historically black college for women, one of only two in the nation, Bennett’s role in the educational landscape is vital. We stand with Bennett and support it in its mission. Together, we celebrate the collective values on which our institutions are built.”

HPU made the announcement after faculty voted enthusiastically in favor of the challenge gift to support Bennett. Faculty from both institutions came together for fellowship and support during the announcement.

Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, President of Bennett College, gives High Point University President Nido Qubein a professional embrace of gratitude

“I am grateful for High Point University President Nido Qubein’s generosity and his guidance through this process,” said Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, president of Bennett College. “Bennett College has been overwhelmed by the support of so many. High Point University’s gift is impactful, and we couldn’t have reached this important milestone without them. Institutions like Bennett and High Point University are strong, and when we work together, we are capable of achieving phenomenal results.”

Qubein, who has completely transformed and raised $400 million for HPU, said the world is a better place with Bennett College in it.

High Point University President Nido Qubein addresses the gathering

“As the president of a university that is blessed with resources, advocacy, and opportunities, I’m compelled by this excerpt from one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches,” Qubein said. “In the words of Dr. King, ‘Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.’ So today, with the blessing of the High Point University Board of Trustees and faculty, HPU will contribute $1 million to the Bennett College Transformation Fund. We are a better community with Bennett College, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help our friends who have invested their lives helping others. I hope you will join me in praying for Bennett College, advocating for Bennett College, and investing in Bennett College. We are, after all, family.”
